BaMei Village Schools – Gao Er Ka and DaoFu

Gao Er Ka and Daofu Schools in Baimei, Tibetan China, in total have about 61 students and 6 teachers.  Most of the children are from the families of villagers or nomads.   Many of the children have home-made backpacks because they can not afford a real backpack.  Lacking their own rulers protractor sets, etc. they are not able to learn math properly. Mondoro Charities, with your help, would like to help supply these schools with some basic school supplies.  Each of these backpacks will have pencils, markers, notebooks, protractor, eraser, rulers, pencil case,  pencil sharpener and books for the children to color.  This may all seem like simple things for us, but they are a huge thing in an area where all these supplies and materials are extremely limited.  Most of these children are lucky to have a pencil much less a marker set.

It was very humbling to sit before the schools and have them tell us what they needed. Remember that in Tibetan China school funding is not on the same basis as we are accustomed to in the West. Here is a list of what they need and why they need them:

1.Sink for the toilet.  Right now the children have no sink to wash their hands when they come out of the toilet.  We want to build them a sink and give them some soap to teach them some basic hygiene of washing their hands with soap and water after they use the toilet.

2. Tape Player – The school has some CD’s and tapes they get from their books but no way to play them.

3. TV and DVD – The school would like a DVD and TV so they can show the children about the world and play some of the educational DVD’s they get.

4. Office Table and Chair – The principals and teachers have no chairs or tables.

5. New Desks – The schools have desks but they are old and used and well worn.

6. Dictionary – They do not have a proper dictionary for the children to use.

7. Big Rulers, Compass and other such suppliers – The teachers needs some big rulers for the chalkboards, a compass to teach math and other supplies like this.

8. School books – they need some books like Chinese and Math books.

9. Teaching CD’s and DVD’s – the schools would like some teaching CD’s and DVD’s.  In a school where you have only 3 teachers and many of them are not professionally trained or college educated, the teachers also need additional help.

10. Computer – We would like each school to have a computer with educational program on it.  Most of the students have never used a computer before.

11. Medical Supplies – This area is an earthquake area, but the school has no medical kit or supplies.

12. School Backpack Kits for each Child

Mondoro Charities, along with our partners in the program The Global Outreach Foundation, will be going back to this area in September when the new school year starts to bring these supplies to the schools. These supplies will make a huge difference in the lives of these children and their education.
